The Church is…
A Family of Families
God created the original family unit when he created the first man and woman and told them to multiply and fill the earth. Throughout the Old Testament record of ancient Israel we see clearly that God has maintained strong interest in the family. Both the Old Testament and the New have guidelines for fathers, mothers, and children. There are even statements about the place and influence of grandparents. Family is the social foundation of society, but also of the local church. Here at 29th & Yale we have a genuine interest in the health and welfare of our family of families offering counsel, equipping, activities, and other support to moms, dads, and the kids.
The followers of Jesus are called Christians only 3 times in the Bible. But there is a related term used over 200 times – disciple. This term refers to one who follows but who also is a learner or student. It is through the reading and study of the Scriptures that one learns as a disciple. We offer a number of learning opportunities. Obviously through the sermons preached in our worship assemblies the message of God’s word is presented. But we also provide grade/age appropriate Bible classes twice a week for everyone. Guided personal Bible study is also available by trained facilitators. We can provide study materials of various kinds including correspondence courses. Occasionally we have focused series of messages on important topics; some for adults and some for children.
Our congregation began as a church planting on the southern edge of Tulsa. This was one of the fastest growing parts of town at the time. Now our location is very central to the greater Tulsa metro. We are easy to find just a mile south of the fairgrounds with the Golden Driller. Access to our building is quite easy from 1-44, US 64/51 (aka, the Broken Arrow Expressway) as well as I-244 and US 412. Our facility sits just north of the intersection of East 31st Street and South Yale Avenue.
Our immediate neighborhood has roughly 2,000 homes housing some 6,000 residents. Within about a mile that number expands to over 24,000. At 2 miles we have about 100,000 neighbors. We endeavor to serve this mid-town area as we serve God.
As a church we have regular meetings every week. These times are for Bible study as well as praise and worship. We have an open door policy and regularly invite friends and neighbors to join. While some folks who attend may be just visiting we consider them guests. We strive to be warm and welcoming. You will likely find several members greeting you and seeking to get to know you better. This is our way of saying you are important to us. If you should have any questions about our services or a message presented, please feel free to inquire.
Our membership is made up of people from all over the metro area. They function in a variety of capacities in various organizations. In so doing they are salt, light, and leaven to the glory of God. We endeavor to make a more direct impact on our local area in various ways. Our facility is a voting precinct. We occasionally offer seminars on topics we think might be of interest to our community. Many of our members volunteer with Hoover Elementary and are involved with the Neighborhood Association.
What does the term “exclusive” conjure up in your mind? For some it means restricted or selective. Others see the word as referring to something high-priced or expensive. Still more sole or single.
Jesus is the ONLY begotten Son of God. He claimed, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but by Me” (John 14:6). Other Scriptures corroborate this exclusive claim – John 8:24; Acts 4:12.
Furthermore, Jesus commissioned His people to make disciples of all nations and to preach the gospel to every creature. Christianity is distinct from all other world views and religions.
But even among those professing Christianity there is unfortunate division. We encourage everyone to seek true unity in the faith by a return to the apostles’ doctrine and practice as seen in the New Testament. Please consider this challenge a you review Ephesians 4:1-6.
